Cinema Saturday #17

This weeks Cinema Saturday challenge is the fab movie The Princess Bride. I must admit that I did not see this movie until a couple of years ago, though I had a fair idea I'd love it from other people's comments about it. It was great to have an excuse to dig it out and pop it on again.

For my card I decided to take inspiration from Dread Pirate Roberts... ok, so I can't pass up an opportunity to use this set! I left the sails white so the card wasn't too dark, though I dare say the Revenge had all black sails. I've paper-pieced the hull of the ship, stamping it on a piece of Ginger Blossom paper (I wanted to include some of this red for a dress Buttercup wears), trimmed and then stuck it on over the hull as stamped on the White. The Soft Sky background is inspired by another of Buttercup's dresses (you just can't get me away from the costumes... speaking of which I rediscovered The Costumer's Guide To Movie Costumes, great for checking out the costumes without having to pause the dvd, and there are often additional shots though we probably don't need that much detail for cardmaking...), the silver flower represents Buttercups wedding crown, she's got pearls on a number of her dresses, and the sentiment should be self-explanitory :)

Cinema Saturday #14 part 3

My second character card for the Cinema Saturday Creative Challenge #14 is for Gandalf. Gandalf was the first person to join Frodo on his mission to take the Ring to Mordor, and thus the second member of the Fellowship. Obviously this card had the potential to be very drab and plain, but the thing with costumes for this movie is that they are much more interesting and complex than they first appear (which is apt for many of the characters as it gives a better indication of their true nature and Gandalf was greater than he appeared). Using textured cardstock was a given for me, since his clothing has such a "thick" weave. To add some interest I drew on the hem decoration of his culottes, stamping the lower part in Going Gray ink and the upper part in VersaMark. The strip of velvet ribbon is for the fuzz of his felt hat. I decided to make this a thank you card in recognition of the assistance he provided to Frodo, the Fellowship and the other races of Middle Earth in the struggle against Sauron. Just like Sam's praise of Gandalf in the Fellowship EE (Extended Edition, where the film was re-editted and some scenes were extended, others were completely brand new), this card does not do him justice but is fitting.

Cherished Paisley

This was my response to the second Inklings cyberstamp challenge, a sketch and colour combo challenge. As I was playing catch-up with the challenges I had only skimmed what they were, opened the corresponding images in separate tabs in my browser, yadda yadda yadda... created a card based on the colours, then created a card base on the sketch. At some point I went back and saw they were to be combined... d'oh! Ah well lol

For this card I used a So Saffron card base (14.8 cm square), a layer of Whisper White stamped with Paisley in Pumpkin Pie on a slightly larger Wild Wasabi layer, and a small piece of Sahara Sand with that "cherish" stamp from Baroque Motifs again stamped in Whisper White. I stamped the large image from Brocade Basics on both the Sahara Sand piece and Paisley layer (masking a lot of it off) using VersaMark, pierced holes around the edge and then stitched this outline with linen thread. This took ALL DAY and nearly KILLED my fingers... I tend not to like large holes showing in my stitching and my fingers really paid for it that day, pulling the needle through rather than making extra large holes that the needle would just glide through. I also pierced holes along the horizontal edges of the base card and ran a piece of So Saffron ribbon (from the Fairy Tale Ribbon Originals pack) across the card. Like a lot of people who took up the challenge, these are not colours I would normally team-up, but I really what I came up with.
